If you are familiar with windows update, or any patch update software, then you may have encountered the unfortunate instance in which you apply a new software patch to your system only to find that the patch has either failed completely or seriously degraded your performance. This is where patch management comes into play. Critical systems, such as bank PC for example, can not afford to have patches that compromise or degrade system performance. Therefore, effective patch management must also integrate a team of qualified patch experts to plan and execute system patches. This team will most certainly have a security expert who is up to date on all current system threats and who is also versed in the vulnerabilities of the system under his or her watch. The patch management team must then use this information to determine which segments of a system are not critical, which ones are, and then mitigate proper patch deployment and system integrity checks. It is clear that having a software update alone can not serve as an exclusive patch management solution. Even in the simplest case, the software that does the patch checking and updating will need to be occasionally be updated itself. However, with the guidance of a patch management team, an enterprise will be able to select a patch management suite to meet the requirements and goals of their organization. With the constant threat of malicious code available on the internet it is clear that systems can not be implemented with the old install it forget it mentality. Even the personal PC user at home must be vigilant in keeping his or her system secure and updated. This often means having some sort of virus scan engine along with routine installation of critical updated. For an enterprise with multiple users, it is clear that this is not a one person job. Instead, it requires the use of a patch management software suite in conjunction with the oversight of a patch management team.
