Foreign Domestic Workers - Heroes? With the economy generally causing most people some form of challenge, there still appears to be a booming market for Foreign Domestic Workers in Asia. Hong Kong has been one of the largest Asian communities of Foreign Domestic Workers for a very long time, with the Filipino community serving the largest portion of Foreign Domestic Workers there.
Today there are still large numbers of Filipino, Indonesian, Nepalese and Thai workers in Hong Kong and more still looking for opportunities to get work there and improve their lives and their families' lives at home. The challenges faced by the average Foreign Domestic Workers should not be underestimated. Many leave there families behind for many many years without seeing them, just to be able to earn little money and send it back to their families.
On top of the distance and time they are away from their loved ones, Foreign Domestic Workers are also left to the mercy of governments that exploit them - including their own, hiring families that abuse them and a general racial tension between the Filipinos and the rest of Asian society. The average Foreign Domestic Workers, life is hard, often unhappy and sometimes perilous.
Never underestimate the sacrifice these mother, daughters and sisters make for their families. It's unheard of in the west for such hardships to be necessary for the average person. This is a face of Asia that is not well known to the outside world. These women, our Foreign Domestic Workers, are, to their families, true "Superheros".
