Tarps for commercial/industrial needs have many different requirements in strength, endurance, thickness, size, and size need for coverage.  Many of these tarps need to be at least water-proof, mildew-proof, acid resistant, and tear resistant.  In some environments, they need to be extreme heat or cold resistant to maintain their other properties and last for the duration of the job they are designed to complete.  You need specialists that can custom craft these tarps so they can do the jobs needed.  You need professionals such as those at Luker Custom Canvas!

Canvas tarps are considered the most durable, and also the most environmentally friendly, as they are made from natural cotton fibers.  The coating used to ensure the canvas is water-resistant and mildew-resistant is made from paraffin – again, environmentally friendly.  Canvas tarps can be treated with chemicals to make them water-proof and mildew-proof, which would also add to their longevity of use.  They have the added advantage of not retaining moisture on the inside surface and not trapping heat as much as a poly-tarp, as their breathability is better.  There are downsides for some commercial needs, however, as you would not want one to rip if pulled too tightly across truck bed contents, or leak water or colors and coatings of the canvas through to the contents it might cover, when the moisture pools on top of the canvas tarp and eventually seeps through to the contents below.

Polyethylene or vinyl tarps are better suited for long-hauling truck jobs, where you need the moisture-proof capabilities, as well as draining capabilities for heavy rains. Various coatings are available to ensure moisture-proofing, mildew-proofing, fire-resistance, and anti-static properties.  As coatings are applied right to the fabric threads, the abrasive capability of the tarp is reduced – and the greater the coating, the greater the fabric weight and abrasion resistance.  Vinyl tarps are thicker because of the coating, and good for needs such as swimming pool covers that cover and re-cover frequently.  They also are more resistant to sunlight, and water seepage back up through the fabric.  Vinyl pool covers are also oil-resistant.

Heavy-duty poly-tarps are also good for lasting outdoors for several months, making them a good choice if you need long-term coverage for things like baseball fields, hay bales, motor homes, or construction sites, for example.  They are resistant to mildew, moisture, acid, and have some UV protection.  They are built to withstand temperature extremes as well.  Many needs can be met by these tarps, from salvage coverage, to roof tear off tarps, to a truck load of lumber.
